A single decision sparked a journey that transformed my life forever. I was tired—physically, emotionally, and mentally. I wasn’t just unhealthy; I wasn’t the person I knew I could be. I wanted more for myself, but I didn’t know where to begin.

I knew I needed to change for my health, to be better at my job, and to one day start a family. Fast forward to today: I’m the healthiest I’ve ever been, I’m well on my way to landing my dream job, and I’m closer than ever to building the life I’ve always dreamed of. I’ve reached heights I never imagined, all because of one decision.

But where do you start when you know you need to lose over 100 lbs? How do you even begin to change your life?

Starting Small, Staying Committed

It all started with small changes, beginning with a daily walk. I made my goals SMART—Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. No complicated plans or expensive programs. Just daily walks, taking time during my lunch break to connect with coworkers and enjoy the beautiful campus where I worked. That simple habit made the process enjoyable and sustainable.

From there, my goals grew. I started drinking more water—lots and lots of water. I learned about portion control and used helpful tools to stay on track. Asking for help, whether from friends, family, or professionals, became a crucial part of my journey. Like asking for a tutor when you’re struggling, admitting I needed support was a game changer for me.

The hardest part? Asking my loved ones to adjust. Telling them, “Stop offering me food,” or “Please separate my meals from yours” wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. These were small but significant steps that brought me closer to my goal.

Progress Comes with Challenges

Through these SMART goals and simple changes, I began to experience real progress. I’ll never forget stepping on the scale for the first time and seeing the number dip below 200 lbs. It felt like standing on top of a mountain, breathless with joy. I wasn’t just losing weight; I was gaining confidence, energy, and a whole new perspective on life.

But progress isn’t linear. Yes, there were setbacks. Yes, I made mistakes. But I learned from them, picked myself back up, and kept going. I’m a food addict, and I say that with pride. It’s a part of me, and I’ve learned to manage it. Temptation is still there—sometimes it’s hard to say no to chocolate or ice cream—but each “no” has become a step toward loving myself more.

The Power of Visualization

Since starting my journey, I’ve lost 150 lbs and kept it off. I’ve set new, bigger goals to maintain my healthy lifestyle. I’m an avid runner now—something the old me couldn’t have even imagined. It began with a 30-second run, part of the Couch to 5k program. That led to my first 5k, then a 10k, a half marathon, and finally… my first full marathon!

But it wasn’t just about running. It wasn’t about motivation either—it was about discipline. I showed up every day, and I kept going. The marathon I ran wasn’t just a race; it symbolized the long, steady effort I put into transforming my life.

What Accountability Means

Accountability isn’t about perfection. It’s about fulfilling the promises we make to ourselves. We won’t always be the best, but through consistent, simple actions, we can progress, little by little. Slowly but surely, you’ll find yourself succeeding in ways you never thought possible.

Take a moment—close your eyes and take a deep breath. Picture your own finish line. Maybe it’s not losing 150 lbs or running a marathon like me. Maybe it’s simply being able to walk up the stairs without feeling out of breath or living a healthier lifestyle for your family. Whatever it is, visualize it. Feel it. Now, work toward it, step by step. Run your own marathon.
