5 Years Strong: Sharing What Works and What I'm Still Discovering

Oh How I Miss Being a Library Assistant

I know there are people out there reading this post who work in Customer Service jobs, and I know that you all have your stories about customers who were just sooooo much fun to serve.

As a student, I’ve had to work while going to school which has not been fun. Even better is working a customer service job during this time.

Oh, I do love my job, I really do. The library is a gorgeous building with plenty to offer to all the people in the area. Anyone who thinks that libraries don’t serve a purpose anymore obviously don’t use them.

But working in an inner city library is not easy. Especially working in a high demand department like Reference, where I am actually asked to be a “know-it-all”. I have to be able to know how to write Resumes, apply to jobs and write cover letters. I have to know how to answer any reference question that comes my way, or who to refer it to. I have to know Genealogy and History, Math and Writing. I have to be certified to proctor tests and OOOOh…..so much. But it’s actually very rewarding and a lot of fun. Many of the people are great.

Then….there are the patrons who make it into “the book” lol it’s not real, but my coworkers and I joke all the time that we should write a book about certain patrons that we come across that are just too unreal to believe.

My favorite are the ones who throw up on the computers, or dance in front of me while taking their shirts off…yikes!

Luckily, these patrons are usually made up by other wonderful patrons who bare gifts and show gratitude. I have one patron who has invited me to join her book club where we all pass books along and have no idea what we will be reading next, it’s decided by other book club readers, very fun!

Do you have any stories of crazy customers, or wonderful customers who have made your day?

I wish I had fun-loving customers! Working in food service is rough because you’re 9/10 times interacting with people who are hungry and hungry people can be rude (and scary)!
